Māori and Pasifika Trades Training

Description

Delivered by The Southern Initiative, the Māori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT) programme helps to bring young Māori and Pasifika learners who face employment challenges into vocational and pre-employment training. The programme supports learners by ensuring access to work-related equipment and resources, as well as providing culturally relevant pastoral care and coaching. Through this, participants are able to develop the skills and capabilities they need for future sustainable employment. The programme is facilitated via partnerships between tertiary education organisations, local employers, and community groups. Additionally, the programme has a specific focus on targeting and increasing the number of young Māori and Pasifika women participating in trades training, given this demographic’s historically low participation levels.

Justification for excellence as assessed against framework

This artefact aligns with R7: Under-served learners. The programme consults with a range of parties – local Māori and Pasifika community groups, iwi, industry, employers, and learners – to understand the specific needs of learners, and deliver equitable solutions that are culturally relevant. This ensures traditional barriers to education and employment are overcome, with programmes learner-centric and customised to learners’ specific needs. Strong pastoral care supports learners throughout their journey, both in learning and their transition into employment, demonstrating excellence in access and participation. This drive to improve access and participation into employment works to close the outcomes gap, creating equal opportunities between these learners and all others.
