Objectives:

The objective of this case study is to outline the opportunities and constraints for training within the Outdoor Vegetable Production sector. Three aspects of Outdoor Vegetable Production are to be investigated:

​Background:

  • ​Overview of Outdoor Vegetable Production uses (agriculture, horticulture, commercial).
  • ​Significance of Outdoor Vegetable Production in the environment, and economy.
  • ​Introduction to Fresh Vegetable NZ’s vision and activities.

​A Skilled Workforce:

  • ​The need for a skilled workforce with an estimate of current practitioner numbers versus the perceived gap between this and what the Outdoor Vegetable Production industry thinks it needs.
  • ​Current skill levels and gaps.
  • ​What appetite and capability the Outdoor Vegetable Production industry has for hosting and/or otherwise supporting training of the workforce.
  • ​Role of vocational education in employee growth and retention.
  • ​Exploration of challenges and risks to the industry.

​Training:

  • ​Identification of training needs and how trainees might be targeted
  • Overview of existing informal and formal training programmes.
  • Identified barriers and constraints.

Abstract:

The purpose of this case study is to offer a comprehensive overview of the key aspects of Outdoor Vegetable Production across New Zealand and to illustrate how formal training benefits the communities relying on Outdoor Vegetable Production, businesses and the New Zealand economy. It also examines the Outdoor Vegetable Production training strategy, exploring the desire and/or need for formal qualification uptake.
