Objectives:
This project aims to provide skill recognition for over 19,000 Pacific RSE workers, that will be recognised in their home countries while also providing significant value to employers in New Zealand.
Introduction/Background:
Each year, over 19,000 Pacific workers are employed in New Zealand’s horticulture industry through the Registered Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme.
In the past, these workers were eligible for government funding for industry training, but recently, both workers and their employers have faced challenges accessing formal training funding. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) has supported RSE workers through the RSE Worker Training Programme, which offers up up to 20 hours of training. However, this training is not linked to formal recognition of the skills acquired.
Current discussions have led to the development of a skills recognition concept, which we hope to test as part of the RSE Worker Training Programme.
