Originator/Sponsor: Food and Fibre CoVE
Portfolio Managers: Jackie Lynch
Status: In Delivery
Planned delivery date: October 2025
Lead Agency/Service Provider: Ripple Ed
Introduction/Background:
The 21st Century Delivery and Assessment Project was completed in June 2024 and included several recommendations that were prioritised by the Steering Group. However, due to ongoing reforms in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) system, many of these recommendations are on hold until the new system is fully implemented. The Steering Group identified two key recommendations (that would need to be done irrespective of the outcome of those reforms) as priorities:
- Developing a pilot plan to enhance the delivery of vocational education.
- Improving Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) processes and support.
This project focuses on the second priority
Objectives:
The project aims to create;
- Improved guidance documents
- Pre-screening tools for learners
- Digital tools for assessors to conduct RPL assessments
An initial report explores the state of RPL across Aotearoa’s food and fibre sector — and how we can strengthen it.
Drawing on interviews with 30 key voices from across the industry – including educators, employers, and iwi-operated trusts – the report identifies current practices, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. It offers a clear view of how RPL is being used today, how it’s perceived by stakeholders, and where the system can evolve to better serve learners, workers, and the sector as a whole.
The report ‘Recognising Prior Learning (RPL) in New Zealand’s Food & Fibre Industry: Current State & Good Practices’ can be viewed here.
The above information was current as at 21 May 2025.
