Learner-Focused, Industry-Led, Government-Enabled

Akongoue Pasifika Horticulture Programme

A collaborative programme with strong pastoral care and a vision to guide learners through a horticulture career, the evaluation measured the impact on participants, their communities and stakeholders.

Akongoue Pasifika Horticulture Programme is a collaboration between Tongan Youth Trust, New Zealand Sports Turf Institute, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), and Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), and currently runs across seven secondary schools in Auckland with high engagement among the Tongan community.

With a strong pastoral care element and a vision to guide learners through a career in horticulture Food and Fibre CoVE co-funded an evaluation of the programme with Ministry of Education of New Zealand and MBIE to measure the impact on participants, their communities and stakeholders to ascertain its medium term viability.

The report includes: the results of 24 qualitative interviews; a review of existing programme documents; and an economic model. Key learnings, recommendations and programme feasibility are outlined.
