Phase one of the project looked at ‘The State of Leadership Development in New Zealand’s Food & Fibre Sector’. Initial consultation demonstrated a demand for a high-performance leadership system, underpinned by an academically credentialed framework that can lift the performance and profitability of food and fibre businesses.
Several leadership programmes targeted at varying leadership levels are available, and while many are rated highly by sector leaders, the majority of people are not accessing leadership training. For those who do, the leadership development pathways are often disjointed, and unclear.
A second report builds on these findings, with ‘A Principles-Centred Leadership Model for Aotearoa New Zealand’s Food and Fibre Sector’ outlining a progression framework for leader development (aligned where appropriate to NZQAF).
The third and final report, ‘A Path to Realising Leadership Potential in Aotearoa NZ’s Food and Fibre Sector’, draws from hundreds of perspectives and the enriching concepts of Te Ao Māori and Pacific cultures. This report does not claim to provide a definitive answer to leadership, but instead offers a principles-centred model for leading in the sector, encouraging leaders to find their own personal leadership approach.
The information gathered from this project will also significantly contribute to two additional leadership initiatives – Horticulture NZ Leadership Programme Evaluation and the Food and Fibre Māori Leadership Development Framework.
